Careers Guidance

Theme: Inspire 

In Year 7, all students are inspired to begin thinking about their career pathway based on their own strengths and interests.  They will be able to list two to three careers that are linked to their areas of strengths and interests. Students can list a wide range or careers and pathways.

Activities: 

• Introduction to the World of Work Assembly to increase student awareness of the wide range of careers available to them 
• Students start their careers profile in Tutor Time/PSHE
• Trip to Kidzania – with pre and post work around personal skills and career choices.
• STEM day – within STEM day events there is a focus on looking at the types of careers linked to STEM including employers/employees
• Allocated slot in parent information evening dedicated to sharing the careers programme and highlighting support resources

Year 8

Theme: Inform

In Year 8, all students explore the full range of post 16 options available and potential careers that might link to these. Students are able to list all post 16 available and name some local providers. Students can list a range of career routes possible into a chosen industry.

Activities: 

• Assembly introducing students to post 16 options and the variety of routes career progression can take
• During PSHE and tutor time, update personal careers profile, take module on post- 16 choices, and explore different routes in a variety of industries
• STEM Day - Students have a better appreciation of the variety of career roles available to them in the STEM industries
• Allocated slot in parent information evening dedicated to sharing the careers programme and highlighting support resources.

Year 9

Theme: Explore

In Year 9, All students are able to make well informed choices about their GCSE options based on career preferences or interests. Students can articulate all post 16 options available and identify the one that seems more suitable for them. Students understand what a selection process is and are able to articulate their own areas of strength and areas for development.

Activities: 

• Assembly introducing GCSE option choices and how this may impact upon their post 16 and 18 choices.
• During PSHE and tutor time, students update their profile with up to date information and have access to unbiased information how to make an informed choice about their GCSEs and where these qualifications might take them.
• Series of Speakers from different industries to give careers talks throughout the Year.
• Allocated slot in parent information evening dedicated to sharing the careers programme and highlighting support resources. Particular focus on GCSE options choices.

Year 10

Theme: Develop

In Year 10, all students explore the full range of post 16 options available and potential careers that might link to these. 

Activities: 

• All students take part in a one week work experience placement.
• All students have a 30 minute 1:1 careers interview with a trained careers guidance counsellor
• Assembly introducing Work Experience, why it is important and what students can get out of it. 
• Assembly introducing to making decisions about post 16 options including ensuring all students are aware of the expectations of them to apply for post 16, relevant dates and open evenings and to begin seriously thinking about beginning this process. 
• During PSHE and tutor time, update career profile with an up-to-date list of career suggestion
• Students begin to build a comprehensive body of evidence around their own employability/experiences.
• In conjunction with personal careers guidance from qualified counsellor, students begin to develop their own careers action plan.
• Allocated slot in parent information evening dedicated to sharing the careers programme and highlighting support resources.

Year 11

Theme: Decide

In Year 11 students are supported to make a clear and informed choice about their chosen post-16 route and take a proactive role in making themselves competitive in the application process.

Activities:

•    1:1 support from Careers lead for applications/Post 16 options.
•    Series of Speakers from different industries to give careers talks throughout the Year. 
•    Different careers focus in tutor time each week to give students a regular opportunity to reflect on careers.
•    Support sessions for Post 16 applications.
•    Opportunities to research and explore career choices.
•    Students are given regular opportunities throughout the year to review their action plan developed with the Careers Councillor.
•    Students are encouraged to continue to develop a personal profile. 
•    All students have a 30-minute 1:1 careers interview with a trained careers guidance counsellor.
•    Representatives from a wide range of post-16 provisions are invited to attend a variety of events so students are well-informed about all options.
