Exceptional Education at the Heart of the Community

Year 7 Literacy and Numeracy Catch-up Premium

Students at Oasis Academy Arena who have low attainment in English and Maths require additional interventions in order to narrow the gap between them and their peers. These interventions are put in place primarily by the Inclusion Faculty. The Deputy Principal for Inclusion, alongside the SENCo, is responsible for managing Intervention programmes.  These interventions are delivered by a team of Teaching Assistants and specialist teachers.

Students who did not achieve the expected standard in reading or maths at the end of KS2 in reading or maths (i.e. less than a level 4 in 2015, or less than a scaled score of 100 in 2016 and beyond) are identified.

Transition Process

Further evidence is sought through liaising with primary schools during the Y6-7 transition process, and through observations in the first two weeks at the Academy in September.  In Y7, Cognitive Ability Tests (CATS) in Non-verbal, Verbal and Quantitative Ability provide additional information for those students who are functioning at below average level.  Students take a New Group Reading Test (NGRT) to be given a reading age and a standardised score, which indicates the ranking of students’ ability in reading and comprehension against those of the same age.  The data provided also allows wn into pupil’s reading and comprehension skills (including phonics where necessary).
